With over thirty years of experience, Ed Underwood leads our team of pastors and staff at Church of the Open Door. Ed enjoys teaching the Bible for life-change, training and equipping leaders, and leading a church with the faith to ask God for big things.
“I did not grow up in a Christian home,” Ed says. “This has marked me with a deep appreciation of the Lord’s power to transform lives, families and cultures. When Jesus Christ steps in, nothing should be the same.”
Ed is a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary and “in his younger years” served as an officer in the United States Army and a firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service.
Ed and Judy have three children and seven grandchildren.

Are the ‘Lost Gospels’ real?
“These lost gospels and these new gospels and these new insights, every one that I’ve ever chased down, is not lost, it is not new, and it’s not saying anything new,” says Ed Underwood, Author and Pastor at Church of the Open Door in Southern CA. “In the science and the discipline of textual criticism, we’ve always known that these fragments […] were there, they just did not measure up to the requirements of church history.”
Does accountability work?
“I think it has its place, but it’s a very limited place,” says Ed Underwood, Author and Pastor at Church of the Open Door in Southern CA. Accountability groups are very useful in some situations, but only have limited effectiveness in others. People can begin hiding their mistakes or redefining their mistakes so they don’t have to report them. “Accountability is really good after the sin…protective love can grab my life before the sin.”
What should I do if my friend keeps sinning?
“We shouldn’t be offering the comfort of fellowship,” says Ed Underwood, Author and Pastor at Church of the Open Door in Southern CA. At an individual level, the final step when a friend refuses to stop sinning is to break off the relationship. “This isn’t forsaking them. This isn’t excommunicating them. This is simply exercising church discipline in a very personal way.”
