Mike Caba :: What is the difference between Sunni and Shia Islam?
“It’s a difference in succession and a difference in leadership,” says Mike Caba, Archaeologist and Dean of Faculty at Kilns College. The origin of these two major branches of Islam is rooted in a succession dispute that occurred after Mohammed – the founder of Islam – died. However, to an outsider “they’re very similar on a lot of things.”
Mike Caba :: Is Mormonism the same as Christianity?
“I view Mormonism as substantively different than historical Christianity,” says Mike Caba, Archaeologist and Dean of Faculty at Kilns College. While not every event in the Bible can be proven, the Bible has been shown archaeologically to be situated within an actual historical context, whereas the Book of Mormon has not. “If you claim to have a prophet who is claiming to teach a history, and that history is shown by all reasonable investigation to not exist anywhere, then that’s a big deal.”
Mike Caba :: What’s the greatest mistake we make in dealing with other religions?
“Intellectual colonialism: not taking those religions for what they say they are,” says Mike Caba, Archaeologist and Dean of Faculty at Kilns College. When we say things like “all religions are the same” or make sweeping generalizations about other religions, we disrespect them and negate their individual identities. “You can disagree all day long, but don’t say about them what they do not say about themselves.”
