What are rocket stoves, and could wood-burning replace coal in Africa?

Rocket stoves are high efficiency wood-burning stoves. “It’s a really neat design,” says Dr. Robert F. Harder, Professor and Chair of the Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering Department at George Fox University. But in places where wood isn’t available, charcoal might still be the answer. Stove innovation won’t do away completely with the issue of particulates and fuel economy. “The thing is, we’re still burning, so we still need the fuel chain.”

What are engineers doing to combat injustice in the U.S.?

“There’s really not a marketplace for medically fragile children, so there are not going to be a lot of products designed to meet their needs,” says Dr. Robert F. Harder, Professor and Chair of the Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering Department at George Fox University. The Servant Engineering Program is currently working on two projects: a money reader for the blind and vibrational therapy to strengthen the bones of medically fragile children.
