Richard Twiss :: The Colonization of Consciousness

  • While many people believe that ‘Sioux’ is the original name of the northern Native American tribe, ‘Sioux’ is actually a French derivative of their enemies’ – the Chippewa – name for their tribe, which means ‘treacherous snake.’ Because its history makes ‘Sioux’ a rather dubious name, many people in the tribe have gone back to their original names: Eastern Dakota, Western Dakota or Lakota. However, some of the Lakota/Dakota prefer to retain the name ‘Sioux.’ “Why do we do that?” asks Dr. Richard Twiss, Author and President of Wiconi International, “The Colonization of Consciousness, which is the final frontier of the colonial project: to get a people to no longer believe they’re that people anymore.”
