Richard Twiss :: On Native American Sports Mascots

  • “The offence is at several different levels,” says Dr. Richard Twiss, Author and President of Wiconi International. “It’s not the word [Indian], but…the images and the caricatures and the characterizations.” America’s situation is unique because our Native peoples have suffered centuries of disenfranchisement and dehumanization by the dominant white culture. “To be characterized and depicted in those cartoonish sort of ways around sports, while there may be values of competition, etc., to have those values extracted from our sense of being and identity…is very offensive.”
