In order for justice to flourish, sometimes powerless people need to be empowered, which almost always means someone with power needs to give some of theirs away. Power is a difficult thing to let go of, especially when letting it go means losing comfort or missing out on pleasure. “We don’t see power being given up very easily,” says Leroy Barber, Author, President of Mission Year and CEO of FCS Urban Ministries, “because I’ll lose my friends, and I may also lose some of my stuff or some of my influence.” However, equality can’t occur unless the powerful disseminate their power to the powerless. “That equality is where I think there’s a hidden gem of the gospel.”
