Leroy Barber :: Why is diversity essential for successful missions boards?

  • “85% of [non-profit] boards are made up of white males,” says Leroy Barber, Author and Global Executive Director of Word Made Flesh. “Meaning, that is the predominate culture making decisions for people of color, predominately, because about 52% of the missions and the work of non-profits are to communities of color.” Because of the lack of diversity, it can be difficult for minorities to move into positions of leadership within missions organizations, and boards can become very disconnected from the communities they are trying to serve. “What this creates are policies and culture and decisions that lack the relationship necessary for good policies and good decisions for those particular communities.”
