Ken Wytsma :: Why didn’t Paul speak out against slavery?

  • How does the New Testament speak to the issue of slavery? “We need to put ourselves back into that culture,” says Ken Wytsma, President of Kilns College and founder of The Justice Conference. “The problem with the slavery question is that we’re separated by 2,000 years.” Ken explains that our understanding of Old Testament slavery is not comparable to the Trans-Atlantic slave trade or modern-day sex slavery. As for Paul, he did speak on behalf of the slave Philemon as a brother in Christ to grant his freedom. As Paul dictates, we are all equals in Christ. “It’s the kind of equality that brings true freedom,” Ken says. “Christ gives us a reality where there is equality.”
