Ken Wytsma :: What is ‘The Book of Life’?

  • ‘The Book of Life’ is one of those difficult symbolic ideas in the Bible, but it appears to have been rooted in a Judaic cultural tradition. “There was a registry with your name in it that basically was akin to citizenship. Sometimes people would be blotted out or erased out, removed, and the implication was that you lose your citizenship,” according to Ken Wytsma, President of Kilns College and Founder of The Justice Conference. If that’s the correct interpretation of the symbolism of The Book of Life, it would seem that Jesus is saying our citizenship is registered with him, and he won’t ever blot our names out or remove our citizenship.

Two references to The Book of Life outside of Revelation:
Psalm 69:28 – May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous.
Philippians 4:3 – Yes, and I ask you, my true companion, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life.
