The Old Testament discusses leaving behind gleanings in the field for others when harvesting, and that is a beautiful metaphor for tithing, says Ken Wytsma, President of Kilns College and founder of The Justice Conference. There are two types of giving: the “firstfruits” or tithe is ten percent given off the top of our income to God, which He uses for His purposes. The second ten percent is the leftovers or surplus of our income. “How do I be generous or charitable with it?” Ken asks. “I’m going to have faith and I’m going to be faithful.” This includes using not only our money, but our time and resources for the benefit of others.
