Ken Wytsma :: Does Christmas have Pagan origins?

  • “Everything about our faith is set somewhere along the way in time, in culture,” says Ken Wytsma, Pastor of Antioch Church in Bend, OR and President of Kilns College. The Roman Empire chose to celebrate December 25th as Jesus’ birthday for practical cultural reasons. That doesn’t remove or tarnish the meaning of Christmas. What matters most is not the origin of our cultural traditions, but rather the condition of our hearts when we’re observing them. “If we get too hyper-focused on what’s allowable or not allowable from a cultural standpoint, we’re going to get distracted.”
