Josh Butler :: What is holy war, specifically in the Old Testament?

  • “We tend to think of Holy War as…using the gods or god to justify the conquest of the weak,” says Josh Butler, Pastor of Global Outreach at Imago Dei in Portland, OR. Rather, Holy War in the Old Testament is God interceding on behalf of the least of these, against strong and tyrannical power structures. The language of war in the Old Testament tends to be dramatic, exaggerated language rather than literal understanding. Through the slow overtaking of land by the Israelites, God sends a message to the ancient world that He stands for the vulnerable and oppressed.
