Gerry Breshears :: What does scripture say about how we should forgive?

  • “If somebody sins against you, what should you do first?” answers Dr. Gerry Breshears, Author and Professor of Theology at Western Seminary, “the first thing is to watch yourself.” Luke 17:3-4 provides a great foundation for the principle of forgiveness. The second thing Jesus says in this passage is that we should rebuke the person who hurts us, similar to what is described in Matthew 18:15. The last piece that Jesus includes is restoration, if they admit their wrongdoings, then forgiveness can occur. “The command in scripture for forgiveness is a command for a forgiving attitude; we do not always forgive.”

Luke 17:3-4 “So watch yourselves. “If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”
