Gerry Breshears :: Should I encourage someone to get over their grief?

  • “Helping means that we’re going to go into the deep place of deep pain with a person and help them get past the pain and process it well,” according to Dr. Gerry Breshears, Author and Professor at Western Seminary. Telling someone to “get over it” is a rejection of their cry for help and a refusal to actually feel their pain and process it along with them. In Exodus 2, God lays out a pattern for (1) hearing grief, (2) remembering his covenant or obligation to care, (3) “looking on” or connecting spiritually, (4) being concerned about the grief, and finally (5) rescuing the suffering person. “I find that a real helpful pattern to work with.”
