Gerry Breshears :: Does God see grief as a lack of faith?

  • Does being sad mean we’re admitting that the cancer has won, rather than believing God for a cure? “We should follow the example of Jesus in the Garden, where he is agonizing and crying out,” says Dr. Gerry Breshears, Author and Professor of Theology at Western Seminary. Gerry tells a story about a conference he attended where a Prosperity Gospel preacher rebuked a singer for singing a song of comfort to a woman with cancer. Sadly, the preacher was upset “because to sing a song of comfort to somebody with cancer is to curse her so that she accepts the cancer, and what she should be doing is praying prayers of faith.” We should take a more realistic, mature perspective on sorrow and mourning than to dismiss it as a lack of faith in God’s ability to heal.
