In the 1800’s, justice and evangelism were linked. In the 1900’s, justice and evangelism were divorced in the church and justice was often ignored in the pursuit of evangelism. Is our 21st century culture doing the opposite: ignoring evangelism in the pursuit of justice?
“The danger is always over-compensation,” says Dr. Soong-Chan Rah, Author and Professor of Church Growth and Evangelism at North Park Theological Seminary. But sometimes when something has been unbalanced for a long time, it has to be unbalanced in the other direction for a little while before it can level out. “I think we’ve been in a compensatory stage.” The hope is that after this brief unbalance in favor of justice we can return to an integrated, balanced view of the relationship between justice and evangelism.
