How needs were actually identified and addressed in the early church is heavily debated. The heart of the issue seems to be: whose needs do we meet first? Galatians 6:10 seems to indicate that the church community ought to be a priority, but not an exclusive beneficiary.
“We never have enough resources to meet all the needs,” says Dr. Gerry Breshears, Professor of Theology at Western Seminary and Co-author with Mark Driscoll of several popular books on doctrine and the church, “but I think it does need to go beyond the church.”
