“It’s basically just the reduction of wood,” says Dr. Robert F. Harder, Professor and Chair of the Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering Department at George Fox University. Charcoal is created by heating wood in a kiln or oven in an oxygen-free environment. There is growing concern about the effect the charcoal industry is having on Africa. “If you look at a map of Africa, you see very large deforested areas.”
